Mood Disorders
Mood disorders present a broad spectrum of emotional challenges. Going beyond the usual mood fluctuations, these conditions can significantly impact an individual’s life. As a counselling psychologist deeply committed to understanding and alleviating the challenges of mood disorders, I am dedicated to walking with you on this journey, offering personalised, empathetic support and therapy tailored to your unique experience and needs.
What are mood disorders?
Mood disorders are mental health conditions characterised by significant disturbances in your mood and emotional state. They go beyond daily life’s typical emotional ups and downs, leading to persistent feelings that can profoundly impact your ability to function and enjoy life.
In addition to these mood alterations, individuals may also experience feelings of hopelessness, shame, and guilt. Other associated symptoms encompass disruptions in sleep patterns, changes in body mass index, and a diminished ability to concentrate. It is not uncommon for individuals with mood-related conditions to contend with thoughts related to suicide.
The spectrum of symptoms highlights the multifaceted nature of mood disorders, emphasising the importance of comprehensive assessment and support for those navigating these challenging conditions.
What are some of the most common mood disorders?
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
In my work with MDD, I encounter individuals who are grappling with a deep and persistent sense of sadness, a condition far from just a temporary emotional state. It’s a profound, enduring mood that significantly influences how you think, feel, and interact with the world around you.
Some of the key signs of MDD include:
- Persistent sadness
- Loss of interest
- Physical symptoms, such as changes in appetite, sleep and energy levels
- Difficulty focusing and making decisions
- Emotional distress
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar Disorder presents a unique set of challenges, characterised by extreme mood swings from the highs of mania to the lows of depression. I understand these shifts can be overwhelming, affecting every aspect of your life. In our sessions, we’ll explore these experiences together, finding strategies to manage and stabilise these intense mood fluctuations.
Dysthymic Disorder
Dysthymia or Persistent Depressive Disorder, with its chronic low-grade depression, can cast a long shadow over your life. You might feel persistently down or find that your ability to feel joy and enthusiasm is dulled. I’m here to help you navigate these feelings, offering support and strategies to enhance your mood and quality of life.
How are mood disorders diagnosed?
Diagnosing mood disorders typically involves a comprehensive evaluation, which may include:
- A detailed discussion about your symptoms, medical history, family history, and lifestyle.
- Sometimes, a physical exam or lab tests are conducted to rule out medical conditions that could be causing symptoms.
- Assessments or questionnaires may be used to understand your experiences, thoughts, feelings, and behaviour patterns.
- We use standardised criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5 TR) to diagnose mood disorders.
What treatment options are available for mood disorders?
The treatment of mood disorders is multifaceted and often includes a combination of medication, psychotherapy and lifestyle adjustments.
- Medication: Depending on your specific disorder, antidepressants, mood stabilisers, or antipsychotic medications may be prescribed. These medications aim to balance brain chemistry and alleviate symptoms. Medications are prescribed by a psychiatrist.
- Psychotherapy: Various forms of talk therapy are effective in treating mood disorders, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
- Lifestyle Changes: Regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management techniques can support overall mental health and complement other treatments.
